No, mplayer does not do MIDI. For that you need Timidity.

Or playmidi or a MIDI editor (if you want to create MIDIs, too).
Jazz and Rosegarden are pretty good, I hear.

I haven't been able to get either Jazz or Rosegarden to work.
Even on Peanut Linux and Slackware9.1.

So I'll be sticking to the Win3.1 MIDI sequencers I am currently using.
They do OK. :) see my website !

Ron

I just downloaded the source code for playmidi 2.5 (final version, 1998) and was told I needed Voxware to Configure but I managed to Configure (for SB AWE32, which I have two of - this one appears to synthesize not use a library of midi sounds).

I typed make and got Error 2 - it could not find /asm/ioctls.h and /linux/soundcard.h, both of which I have.
/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/include/asm/ioctls.h
/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/include/linux/soundcard.h

What might I be doing wrong? Is this 1998 source code looking in some other place than where Slackware 7.1 puts things?

I have libncurses.so.5.2 (2002) in /usr/lib and also /usr/include/ncurses/ as required.

The README.1ST said the Makefile was designed for a 'recent Redhat'.

In the Makefile:
# stuff for sound blaster awe32
INCAWE = -DVOXWARE_CONTROLLER_7_WORKING
# awe_voice.h path
INCAWE +- -I/usr/lib/oss/include/sys

I don't have /usr/lib/oss but I do have
/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/include/config/sound/oss

Where should I be looking for the missing pieces?

I think it is designed to use ncurses and/or gtk and/or svgalib and/or X11R6 - I can't figure out if it needs them all.
