Interesting. I don't know of anybody else running KDE on
BasicLinux.

Not with KDE, but some of us have added bits of GTK/Gnome.
Icewm was designed to be small-footprint window manager for
Gnome, and many Gnome applications (like sylpheed and AbiWord)
can be made to run on BL3 without too much trouble. Personally
I use all of the above on BasicLinux, plus Gnumeric (the Gnome
spreadsheet). Gnumeric was more difficult to install -- it
required most of the Gnome foundation packages.

I would expect a similar Gnome installation to be less
than that.

Rather than installing the complete desktop, I would first
get the wm working and then install the desired applications
(plus the libraries shown by ldd). This is probably easier
to do with Gnome than KDE.
