In English: sox cannot autodetect a filetype unless it "sees" the
file extension. It obviously can't do this with a pipe. You need
to pass options which tell it what kind of input it is receiving.

I could try writing a script to produce audiodump.wav and pipe that
to play but this seems unnecessarily complex, considering Ron got
it to work directly.

I agree. It would only be useful for decoding things which mpg123
cannot handle.

So what am I missing to make mplayer play wav or mp3 files directly?
