I dialed as 'root' then switched terminals and logged in as 'user'
and ssh followed by the login@URL tells me 'permission denied'.
Telnet 'cannot open connection'. I had already done chmod +x ssh
for it to be executable by everyone (it would not work even as root
before this).

I forgot to mention that I was trying to ssh and telnet from within kermit (so as to use Kermit file transfer on the same connection).

Today I tried plain ssh without kermit as user, and it worked, eventually,
but gave me a row of error messages in the process:
/bin/sh: /dev/null: Permission denied (several times)

Plain telnet also works.

Kermit plus telnet spends a lot of time on DNS lookup and reverse DNS lookup but eventually gets me there. Yesterday I had given up waiting.

I can do ftp from within Kermit with no problems, so I guess I can ssh without kermit and connect a second time to do file transfer if I want to login as 'user' for extra security. This takes more time than kermit with file transfer.

If I wanted to use Kermit, would it be more secure to ssh as 'root' or telnet as 'user'? I have been telnetting for years and nobody has yet stolen my password that I know of. Modem connection.

Sindi
