I dialed as 'root' then switched terminals and logged in as 'user'
and ssh followed by the login@URL tells me 'permission denied'.
Telnet 'cannot open connection'. I had already done chmod +x ssh
for it to be executable by everyone (it would not work even as root
before this).

Try chmod 777 ssh, to allow everyone full access.

It was already -rwxrwxrwx.

My error message is
/dev/ttyp0: Permission denied
This was crwx------
chmod 777 /dev/ttyp0 > crwxrwxrwx (I did a chmod -x next > crw-rw-rw-)

I still get the same Permission denied message. Do I need to reboot or something? I logged out and in again as user.

Why is lpr an 'offline printer'?

I'm not sure I know what you mean by that. Who says it's an offline
printer?

The man page said it was. Maybe that means it puts print jobs in a spool and does them after a user logs off?

How do I get ssh and telnet to work for 'user'?

Give everyone permission to use them and any devices they require.

The only device mentioned for ssh was /dev/ttyp0.

Has anyone else managed to ssh or telnet with BL2 or BL3 as user?
