Many ISPs won't let you connect at 2400 bps so the connection may fail even if it does dial. We have extra 14.4 external modems if you want to pay postage on one. How old is this computer? Our 386s have 2400 built-ins. We even have a 2400 pcmcia modem. Were there 386s with pcmcia slots or just 486 and later?

YOu can use a DOS program (Kermit and probably other terminal programs) to ask teh modem what speed it is - ati0, ati1, ati2 - eventually it will tell you something with a number in it that suggests the speed such as 24 or 14 or 28 or 33. Will microcom let you do the same and if so how?

How do I configure the modem on my laptop?
The modem is probably a 2400bps modem that
is built into the computer.

Many (most?) built-in laptop modems are win-modems
(i.e. braindead uarts that rely on Windows to drive
them). If you've got one of those, you are out of
luck.

However, with a modem that old (2400bps) you might
have the real thing. Do the following:
------------
dmesg | less
------------
and have a close look for any mention of a modem
or a second COM port (/dev/ttyS??). A laptop
usually has just one COM port, so a second port
is likely to be a modem (unless your laptop has
two COM port plugs).

How do I get pppsetup to recognize it?

You tell pppsetup the port (ttyS) number.

Cheers,
Steven
