Many (most?) built-in laptop modems are win-modems
(i.e. braindead uarts that rely on Windows to drive
them). If you've got one of those, you are out of
luck.

However, with a modem that old (2400bps) you might
have the real thing. Do the following:

dmesg | less
------------
and have a close look for any mention of a modem
or a second COM port (/dev/ttyS??). A laptop
usually has just one COM port, so a second port
is likely to be a modem (unless your laptop has
two COM port plugs).

You tell pppsetup the port (ttyS) number.
