I transferred my 10Mby BL3 loop to hda2 in a 8Mbytes 486DLC.
MidNight Commander and Mutt are included. No X.
These are the results:
Loop hda2
Loading time 22 secs 17 secs
Free (used) 6052 Kbytes 3596 Kbytes
(free) 980 Kbytes 3436 Kbytes
It seems that working in loop, nearly 2500 Kbytes more memory is
required.

This is very surprising. I may try it myself on my computer with 8MB RAM but if I have a 20MB loop file do I also need a 20MB linux partition or could it be 5MB as a test (my hard drive is crowded)? It will make an even bigger difference on the computer with 3MB RAM, which runs linux in much less than 6052 Kbytes. I wonder how you are using so much - was this measured as soon as you logged in by hitting Enter?
