I have a slackware 4.0 'live' directory on

Have you tried running the live filesystem?
-------------------------
mount /dev/hdc /mnt
cd /mnt/live
chroot /mnt/live /bin/sh
-------------------------
You then should be able to run anything in the
filesystem (including the compiler). Some
applications (like the compiler) will need a
writeable /tmp -- so mount a floppy (or something)
at /tmp.

I've actually compiled a kernel using BL3 (floppy
version) and a Slackware 3.2 live filesystem on CD.

is the live directory ever online?

Probably not. Its primary purpose is to function
as a root filesystem, which cannot be done via FTP
or HTTP.

I will try this on another computer. This one has no CDROM drive. I was looking for an easy way to get just a few files, not a whole package, from online. Do SW71 or SW81 have something similar?
