8mb is sufficient for compiling simple stuff (assuming
you add a swap partition -- say 16mb).

When I said that I was assuming he would be compiling a kernel
and/or other complex source code requiring glibc2. Simple
stuff on libc5 is a completely different story.

The initial object file usually includes debugging code. Running
"strip" on it removes that code and gives you a smaller binary
(sometimes many, many times smaller).
