You need to install mc before mc-menu. I used mini-mc which is provided
by JP at his site (see the link to his site for add-on packages). mc-menu
will convert rpm or deb to tgz packages. The one thing I tried it on did
not work - said it was not a correct rpm file. Slackware also provides
unrpm which also did not work on that file (it made a very small output
file).

I can unpack .deb files with ar +x filename.deb. The data.tar.gz file
(one of three it produces) can be unpacked manually after that. I made a
package of ar (from one of the larger slackware packages) and its
dependencies - James do you want to post that at your site?
