[naim for BL1]

If you have enough time, put BL 1.8
or if enough space: Slackware 3.5 :)

Slackware 3.5 uses ncurses version 1.9.9g

Yes, you should prepare temporary directory with
subdirectories containing your package

(some Makefiles let you set destdir with i.e.
make install DESTDIR=/tmp/package_name, some not and
you have to analyze Makefile yourself).

Proposed 'makepkg' from Slackware does the following:

1. Removes all symbolic links and put proper commands
to create them into install/doinst.sh

2. Tar and gzip directory with subdirectories.

So, there is no need to use 'makepkg' :)

All add-ons are welcomed :)
Always.
