Jack,
There is indeed a book out there:
Idiomatic Expressions of Hebrew Bible
Their Meaning and Translation Through Componential Analysis
by Jean-Marc Babout
BIBAL Press, 2003
List Price: $25.95 ($22.06 at Eisenbrauns, $25.95 at Amazon)
It 's a dissertation, but here's an excerpt from the description on Eisenbrauns' web site:
"The aim of this study is to shed light on the meaning of a limited selection of idiomatic expressions by applying the method of componential analysis. This method was popularized and refined in the works of E. A. Nida, who wrote primarily for translators of the United Bible Societies. In that context, it was utilized chiefly in the search for equivalents in the target languages of Bible translation projects, but only rarely has it been applied to the decipherment of the biblical languages themselves."
So, it is more a proof of concept than an exhaustive treatment.
HTH,
James

Hi all:
First, if there are any Muslim members, may I offer my best wishes for
Ramadan.
I have found in my Aramaic background studies relevant to the NEW Testament
that idiom is very often overlooked in doing exegesis. I would be very
interested if some members would post examples of Hebrew idioms, euphemisms,
metaphors and figures of speech from the Tanakh that often go unclarified
but which may affect exegesis, particularly by Christians. Perhaps there is
a seminal work on this as well.
Thanks,
