1. You are right, except that I would put it slightly differently. I
would say that corresponding to ANIY, 'I', there used to be a variant
ATIY, that is preserved only as in attachment.

But it's not necessary.
We can just as well suggest that on the basis of Shamar-t-a, a form Shamar-t-iY was created.

2. Now the question naturally arises as to what is the meaning of the
"suffix" -AH in SHAMR-AH, 'she has guarded', and the "suffix" -U in
SHAMR-U, 'they have guarded'?

I do not see the purpose of looking for a "meaning" of these suffixes.
They mean what they are: -aH is feminine ending "she" and -u is "they".

3. I forgot to mention another word with root CB, namely, ECBA
אצבע 'finger'.

Some people have suggested that this word may have some relationship with sab( "seven".
