This is kind of an amazing question, James. The classifications of Myth,
Legend, Marchen, and Fable are so standard as to be beyond question. One
might argue the particular classification of a literary document, but
everyone is in essential agreement on the basic definitions, at least as a
starting point.

You might want to see Morford and Lenardon's *Classical Mythology,* which
has, as I recall, an excellent introduction to the subject.
