I'd say that both are theoretical possibilities. But not every theoretical possibility is linguistically realised in language. In the case of a grammaticalized deictic /han-/ morpheme or a grammaticalized asseverative /l/ morpheme, typologically /han-/ is to be preferred (see the Miller essay I mentioned).

Yes, I think you're right about Tropper. He argues this based on the common assimilation of nun, doesn't he? In any case, nun and lamed are both sounds along the 'liquid' register, so both are possibilities.
