Hi Yitzhak,

I was taking his statement at face value, but upon reflection we could be meaning entirely different things.

By "short prefix verb" I'm referring to the prior yaqtul :: yaqtulu :: yaqtula paradigmatic contrasts, which is still apparent morphologically as I've previously mentioned and as you know. (The problem is to know what to do with yaqtul: is it homophonous or polysemous? But that's a different issue.)

Regards,
David Kummerow.

Perhaps you could explain what you mean by "short prefix verb"? Does it
mean a verbal inflection of the Semitic prefix-type (as opposed to suffix
type inflections like SOFARTI), and which is also short (YOQOM < *yaqum0
as opposed to YAQUM < *yaqumu)? If so, my guess is that Mr. Fried has
a completely different understanding of "short prefix verb" (probably, a word
prefix that should be analyzed as a short verb).

Yitzhak Sapir
