HH: The translation of the NRSV, NIV, and KJV simply accepts the reality that he lived and died.
JCR: Fair point. But it also accepts the reality that Abraham lived and died and yet will always be considered the father of many nations.
HH: What verse do you have in mind that is relevant to this discussion? Romans 4 won't do the trick:
Rom. 4:18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
HH: First, it is in Greek, not Hebrew. Second, Abraham became the father of many nations because of the faith that he exercised. The verses envisions a process. So "became" is quite appropriate as a translation in the context.
It also accepts that Isreal lived and died but will always be considered the father of the twelve tribes of Isreal.
HH: What verse do you have in mind here?
It also accepts that Eve lived and died but will always be considerd the mother of mankind...
NRSV: Gen. 3:20 The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
