This is the only instance of a ritual of water pouring that I can recall
aside from Nu 5.16 ff. to which I don't see it as being related. Does
anyone have any insight on this?

In other words, in the plain text version of the message the Hebrew was replaced by question marks, and in the HTML version it used HTML character entities (ו etc). The version I saw was based on the HTML and so displayed the Hebrew correctly, but the version which made it to the list was the plain text version, with only the question marks. The character set for both is set as US-ASCII. Probably what George should have done is set the character set to UTF-8, and then the plain text as well as the HTML part could have been properly UTF-8 encoded Hebrew. But I am not sure that this works with his mail client.
