CHOMSKY, W. «What was the Jewish vernacular during the Second Commonwealth». The Jewish Quarterly Review, 42 (1951-1952), pp.193-212. [It is old but I think what it says is still valid.]

DIEZ MACHO, Alejandro. La lengua hablada por Jesucristo. Madrid: Ediciones Fe Católica, 1976. 95p. ISBN 84-7072-053-8

RABIN, Chaim. «La situació de la llengua hebrea al temps de la Mišnà, o En quina llengua predicava Jesús de Galilea?». Límits [Barcelona], nº 5 (november 1988), pp. 5-17. [It is in Catalan. But probably the same author has published similar articles in English.]

SCHÜRER, Emil. The history of the Jewish People in the age of Jesus Christ (175 B.C.-A.C. 135). A new English version revised and edited by Geza VERMES..., Endingburgh: T. & T.Clark,, 1979, vol. II, pp. 1-28.

I have not now the following books at hand, but I think valuable information can also be find in:

SAFRAI, S.; STERN, M. [eds.]. The jewish people in the first century. Historical geography, political history, social, cultural and religious life and institutions. In cooperation with D. Flusser and W.C. van Unnik.Vol. 1. Assen: Van Gorcum & Comp. B.V., 1974 and 1976. 2 vols. (Compendia Rerum Iudaicarum ad Novum Testamentum; Section One: The Jewish People in the First Century; 1 and 2). ISBN 90-232-1070-0 and 90-232-1436-6

Best wishes,

But the issue I would like to explore is the use of Hebrew and Aramaic by 1 century CE Jewish communities and the followers of Jesus. Can someone recommend the best books or articles on the use of Hebrew and Aramaic in the 1st century CE? These can be in Hebrew, German, Greek (modern), Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish (Castellano), Arabic, or Russian.
