Once again, what reason is there to assume that this
is not a historical event? It seems that a large
number of people are unable to believe that there was
indeed an actual man named Jephthah, who actually made
the vow mentioned in Judges and who actually fulfilled
that vow by sacrificing his daughter as a burnt
offering.

Shouldn't one have some viable reason for believing
that this is not the case before he or she leaves the
evidence in Judges in favor of random conjectures?

Being unable to believe it because you are unable to
imagine that such a thing would happen is not a viable
reason. By such reasoning one could conveniently deny
every atrocity in history.
