There are books that focus specifically on the TG stuff (Sam Knee's Untypical Girls, Helen's Lost Women of Rock). There have also been comps like Typical Girls (Emotional Response) and Subliminal Girls which seem to carry on the spirit. I also like (to use Mike Appelstein's term from a post back in 1999 when I started TG) the idea of Torchbearers like Big Joanie -- a member of which band wrote entries for the book. It's always been an important piece of something bigger. In my current work, I often talk about how when I saw Poly on the cover of Germ Free Adolescents how that was the first time I saw a woman on an album cover that I could identify with and then when I heard the music....it was obvious that I wasn't alone in the world and a total freak. I would love to hear more about your "current work" Dina!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've been meaning to write about seeing Paloma McLardy talk in Cambridge a few months ago. Short version - she was wonderful. Very open, positive, warm, and VERY approachable. I felt like she would answer any questions. It was a small venue, put packed. She talked about not liking to follow trends, and being engaged in religious groups, but that now she follows her "own personal jesus" (that expression finally made sense to me). There was more to this, but I can't remember it now. She talked about how growing up in Spain and how her family talked and argued about everything, often heatedly, but in a positive way. Her daughter was in the audience, and she talked about being surprised as a kid when she went to friends houses and they didn't have any instruments! For those that don't know, she has an active Facebook page going.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Someone on this list recommended a few bands recently. Thanks to that, I took the opportunity to go see Shopping. There were fun, upbeat, very tight, and tried to get everyone dancing - in Boston! As they say, bless their hearts. :-) - Lani On Monday, October 15, 2018, 9:43:30 AM EDT, Dina Hornreich wrote: Yes, the WoR book puts the TG stuff in the greater context which to me was important even if it is not just the rock context (like it ever was?).
