Re: Callout for female fanzine UK fanzinewriters, 1975-1984 (Stewart Osborne) Message-ID: Hi Stewart, I think you've kind of nailed what the problem is: People used first names only a lot of the time (or pseudonyms, which creates similar problems re tracking people down) and it was all very casual and low key. It's slightly (though not entirely) easier with people in bands because there tends to be more of a long term imprint on people's memories or in terms of recordings of music, documentation in media form, etc. Or that's what I've found anyway. Was the Stiff Little Fingers fanzine called Nobody's Heroes? there are a few archives that hold punk fanzines so I'd be interested to know. Re: Callout for female fanzine UK fanzine writers, 1975-1984 (viv acious) Message-ID: Hi Viv, I've just had a look and the British Library have Alternative Sounds, at least one issue of, from 1979, so I might check it out as it's not one I've checked out before. It may or may not be the one with your Chrissie Hynde photo in. Did you contribute to other fanzines? My favourite one of the fanzines they have at the British Library is one called Monkey Business, which was from Carlisle and has a picture of two toddlers urinating on the cover. It appeared to be written by three fairly young teenagers who mainly wrote about their local scene. The interviews with local bands are hilarious. Mainly because of riot grrrl, but also, a bit because of twee and C86 I think as well... Certain scenes and moments were enabling for women and girls writing fanzines, plus it was pre internet still then of course so it was zines and letters really. C. Cazz, you might want to interview Julie Davis and Virginia Boston for leads. They authored two early UK zine-like punk books (I bought these when they came out) - maybe you've already seen them, but if not you might be able to find them in a library: -Punk by Julie Davis, 1977 http://www.amazon.com/Punk-Julie-Davis/dp/0860000982 This has lots of Lucy Toothpaste contributions (Slits and X-Ray Spex interviews, influential piece titled "Girl Bands," and another on punk & racism/fascism), Sharon Spike's Slits live review, Jane Suck's Siouxsie interview, and photos by Erica Echenberg. I'm pretty sure some of these contributions are reprints from zines. Someone named Sex Ade contributed - don't know who that is. -Punk Rock by Virginia Boston, 1978 http://www.amazon.com/Punk-Rock-Virgina-Boston/dp/0140049851 This has quotes from lots of zine writers, with some small images of zine covers. The only ones by women are More On by Sarah in London, and White Stuff by Sandy Robertson in Scotland. If Sex Ade is female, she's quoted from her zine New Wave. Also, if you haven't done this already, and can make it to the U.S., you could take a look at Johan Kugelberg's Punk Collection, 1974-86 archive at Cornell Univ. There are a lot of zines, including some early UK ones edited by women. At the very least, check out the online finding aid: http://rmc.library.cornell.edu/EAD/htmldocs/RMM08060.html good luck with your research! Re: Callout for female fanzine UK fanzine writers, 1975-1984 (WWWhatsup) (Sharon Cheslow) Message-ID: Hi Sharon, This is really, really useful for me. Thank you! I think I can get the Julie Davis book on inter library loan, but can't seem to trace the Virginia Boston one. Have found another one of hers that sounds similar in the British Library though. I've also had a look at the online Cornell catalogue, and it looks like a brilliant archive. There's loads of Scottish zines in there that look really interesting. I probably won't make it to the US though as my budget is pretty much nonexistent, but it may be other archives have some of these titles. This has certainly given me plenty to work with, so thank you!
