It sounds like perhaps the original content was not produced using actual
XML(-aware) tools, but by string concatenation or such.
This based on the fact that the attribute values were not properly
escaped/quoted, which would have been done by proper XML writers.
(if so, that should be one of top-5 mistakes done with xml processing)
