The ‘White Mulberry’ planted for the silk industry experiment was not necessarily white fruited and probably was not. It refers to the species Morus alba which is the the main species planted in North America and until recently about the only one in most parts of the country. Its fruit can vary from white to red, purple, and black depending on variety and stage of ripeness. The silk industry failed here because it depended on lots of cheap labor and there were other more profitable crops.
