Our cold weather normally is below freezing and bone dry, so although
wearing cotton is discouraged, in dry weather we generally permit a
cotton layer. Many men who make their living working outdoors wear
insulated overalls made of cotton duck, polyester fill, and a variety
of linings. For SAR, what matters most is wearing layers and having
adequate warm clothing.

I wear bicycle tights, plus cotton jeans or military surplus wool
pants, plus a lightweight ski pant. The ski pant has a puncture and
rip-resistant outer layer, a slick inner layer, and waist to ankle
zippers so I can get it off without removing my boots. I wear the
ski pant in warmer, wet weather too. The ski pant has proved useful
in cold, snow, wind, rain, and thickets. It is only marginally
useful in heavy cactus thickets, but in them even riders in heavy
chaps are not completely safe.
