As long as the pants are dark in color, our team members can ride in what pant they feel most comfortable in.  Several wear (winter weight) riding breeches with half chaps and several others wear 5.11 Tactical EMS BDU pants.  Because the 5.11 pants are cotton, I would suggest treating them with scotch guard (however they do hold up to the bush and briar).   I am sure everyone had heard the "cotton Kills" line.

Regardless of which pant style is worn in winter conditions layering is still a must.  In this region of the mid-atlantic states, it is rare that daytime winter temperatures get below 15 degree, many of our team members wear light weight  under armor and/or silk long underwear as layering, which works very well in our mild winters.

Especially those of you who ride in rough terrain, and in serious winter, what type of pant does your unit wear? Most BDUs are too baggy to be comfortable riding for long distances or in rough brush. English style riding tights rip too easy and don't insulate enough in winter by themselves. Jeans don't make the cut for non-cotton clothing although they are comfy for riding and wear well in brush. Figured I'd get the community response and see how others have solved this problem.
