The problem with being boring is that there are limited venues and therefore
limited routes.
There are few venues that will allow riding off marked trails except for
real emergencies.
I could see using the wide open spaces of a national forest perhaps but the
current trend in environmental sensitivity seems to restrict riders to
trails, not very hard to navigate.

I would propose using an area like Valley Forge National Park where you are
not restricted to marked trails but flat out racing is prohibited. There is
also a DVOA map of part of that area.
There used to be two for French Creek State Park as well (7500 acres plus
some state forest land) but the park manager is not very cooperative of
late. If there are fox hunters around they should have the ultimate routes
available.
