Sorry, I wasn't clear. For the rider who also does technical rescue and carries a climbing helmet, the rider can temporarily wear the climbing helmet while the riding helmet is loaned out to the passenger / found person.

However, consider the perspective of being in the field, with MSAR wearing a cowboy hat and packing along a rescue helmet just in case the situation evolves to a dismount and technical response. As the only helmet available, that would be preferable to no helmet if the situation requires a mounted transport.

If someone has the time and the access to do some research, I'd be interested to see how rescue helmets standards compare with riding helmets for impact protection, etc.

Always keep in mind, when carrying passengers on a horse that are being
rescued or a part of the general public and you put a helmet that is not
approved for horseback riding, you have this evil thing lurking around you
called vicarious liability. [...]

Few in MSAR are trained or equipped for technical rescue, but in a pinch
the
helmet used in technical rescue is very similar to the riding helmet and
could be used. Having a 2nd helmet along also provides a spare to put on
the
head of a passenger you're transporting on an extra saddled horse.
