There have been so many great suggestions in this thread that I think it is
time for me to start back to the library after a 2 year
hiatus.

In the meantime, could you provide us with a brief summary of how Judge
answers the rhetorical question he poses in the article's
title?

The writings of Em. Prof. Edwin Judge are a 'must read' in this area, dating
back to his pioneering 'The Social Pattern of Christian
Groups in the First Century' (1960) and many subsequent articles.

More recently, see his 'Did the Churches Compete with Cult Groups?' in J.T.
Fitzgerald et al (ed.), Early Christianity and Classical
Culture, Brill, Leiden, 2003.
