Thank you everyone. You have given me some very good stuff to refer to.

Three aspects of suffering come to mind when I think about the question I
raised.

Suffering of the righteous (e.g. Job)
Suffering as a result of sin/God's judgment
Eschatological/Messianic woes

I think the Jewish background of each of these can help us to understand
Paul's view of suffering. I'd appreciate if anyone can point me to any
reference material on these topics (ie. if they are not already mentioned
in the books already mentioned in previous e-mails).
