And are there introductory materials (books, articles,
etc) on the Jews' understanding of suffering in the second Temple period?

Not sure it's quite introductory, but Jon Levenson's DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF THE BELOVED SON is stimulating, wide-ranging, and very well written. My impression is that it's been largely neglected by NT students; is that how it appears to others on the list?
