The check methods are excellent! They're like DOM Events, but without having
to instantiate any Event objects if an implementaion never uses them.
Allowing these methods to be overridden is what also allows most of the core
public methods to be declared as final. Variance amongst subclasses are not
allowed to break conformance rules this way.
