HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Tune in Friday at 9 PM from the Inside Track.  This week you’ll hear Hanno Leichtmann with Minimal Studies.  The prolific and very talented drummer and beat-maker Leichtmann offers up his 5th full-length solo effort, a completely immersive set of beautiful beeps and blips that hearken back the Clicks n' Cuts dance music phenomenon of the mid-late 90s. Leichtmann is a founding member of two really great free-jazz/electronic groups in Denseland and Groupshow, but Minimal Studies finds him more or less completely stripping away everything but the most basic chirps and hums, resulting in a shuffling set of micro-thumps that works beautifully.

This week on Hell Or High Water, Gina B will be playing the music of Maria McKee, primarily selections from her 1993 release You Gotta Sin to Get Saved.  "Maria McKee's voice--equal parts Dolly and Aretha--had frequently been great, one song at a time, but it wasn't until You Gotta Sin that this former Lone Justice singer was perfect start to finish. McKee's best batch of songs ever are complimented here by the twisted guitar of Jayhawk Gary Louris, which matches McKee, scream for scream, especially on the closing title track where Maria sends packing the guy she's been chasing all along. She's all over the place--"I'm Gonna Soothe You" is soul, "Only Once" honky-tonk, "I Can't Make It Alone" hard-edged pop--but it all works because McKee has finally reconciled her spirituality with her need for the sensual, over-the-top anthem. --David Cantwell"  Tune in Sunday from 1-2pm!

Tune in at 2 PM for Broken Music.  Join Joe W this week for some out there sounds and sonic explorations.  Bring a pillow and don’t be afraid to cry.

Sunday nights are made lovely every week from 8-9 PM thanks The Backyard BBQ and your host, Lincoln.  Join him for cuts from your favorite local acts, as well as forgotten gems from Chapel Hill and the surround area’s vibrant music history.

Like sports? No? It doesn't matter! Tune in from 9 to 10PM Sunday for Sports Rap to hear hosts Reilly F, Sarah H, and Ryan S diving deep into the questions of sport, America, the will, etc. This week: baseball is finally fun but is moving too fast(?), football, football, and football. Listen live and tweet (@dunksbutts), facebook, or call-in to participate!

Monday’s got the Outside Track.  Tune in from a new releases from Kaboom Karavan entitled Hokus Fokus.  This is the third album from Kaboom Karavan, the project of Belgium’s Bram Bosteels, audio experimenter; film, theatre, and dance composer; and Kreng collaborator. Hokus Fokus features dark theatrical jazziness not unlike Tom Waits’ stuff. Sampled recordings, instrumental improvisation, and enough electronic processing to overload each track with unsettling peripheral activity - these all come together to make something that’s foggy, dreamlike in a fantastical but uncanny and mildly distressing way.
