hi again
as promised here is what i do to repair the problem:
boot from the smgl rescue/install cd (20020701).
choose 'continue booting' from the initrd menu
choose 'shell' from the menu
cd /mnt
mkdir disk
mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda5 /mnt/disk
cd disk
chroot /mnt/disk
mount -t proc proc /proc
mount -t devfs devfs /devices
<mount any other filesystems you need here>
swapon /dev/hda2
cast -r init.d
<umount filesystems>
<ctrl>+d to logout
reboot
