It's academic right now, since I can no longer boot into linux. I
dropped into windows to make use of my java program ( didn't work, I get
an out of memory error on the dataset in windows :/ ), and now my linux
kernels won't boot. I'm going to do some research, as I've forgotten
what kernel boot options to use to start at a different runlevel,
hopefully that will get be back into linux.

It's not been a good week.

Say "<linux kernel> single" to boot into single-user mode, though this
doesn't work with SMGL anyways; after you enter your root password to
enter maintainence mode, SMGL begins booting up as normal and _not_
dropping you to the root prompt! :( My server is completely inaccessible
to me due to this. If I try to use a boot CD (either SMGL or Knoppix, as
kindly suggested by Sergey), I get DMA I/O request/seek errors, and
nothing can mount/view my partitions. :( I think my motherboard is
slightly broken, but I'm not sure as it boots fine...

Any ideas?

BTW, Knoppix has some nice autodetection features for hardware. Any way
we can replicate this?

I've been trying "<linux kernel> 1". Can't tell you what runlevel it's trying to start though, I'd just assumed it was runlevel 1. I get a lot of "Error /proc must be mounted" however I try to boot linux, and after a great deal of waiting I end up with init killing a bunch of virtual consoles because they're respawning too fast.

I am presently downloading a SuSe iso that has a live linux install on it ( demo cd ). I'm hoping that it's current enough to handle what I've got on my SM install, and that I'll be able to fix whatever's wrong.
