I did a 'sorcery update' on Saturday last, and am finally getting all of the
kinks worked out. One major problem remains, however, and I'm stumped.

Something about the latest update has broken java. My guess is the new gcc,
but that's only a guess, I've got no real clue.

Trying to execute java results in the following:
===
tedberg@skynet:~/bin$ java
There was an error trying to initialize the HPI library.
Please check your installation, HotSpot does not work correctly
when installed in the JDK 1.2 Linux Production Release, or
with any JDK 1.1.x release.
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
tedberg@skynet:~/bin$
===

An 'strace java' shows that the last library loaded before the JVM exits is
libhpi.so, but it doesn't look like the load results in an error. Frankly,
I'm in over my head with the strace output, and am in the market for ideas.

I've considered fetching the java sources from Sun and building them myself,
but it seems that java is required to bootstrap the build at one point so I
have something of a catch 22.
