these are fairly big changes IMO so i think they should still go
in a project branch at least until theres a complete spec on the wiki
defining exactly what it is you're doing. What you have below is great
but theres obviously some things that still need to be worked out, and
as a matter of policy id like all major things like this to be defined
and hashed out on the wiki for future maintainers, users, gurus, etc.
to refer to.

I also think it would be better to do your collaboration in the sub-branch
until you feel all this stuff is worked out and resolved, AND we decide
to do it in 1.12, if we decide against that, we're stuck with things
in devel, we've got 6 months, and I've got a boatload of other features
to get in, not to mention we need an iso for all the regular users, who
/dont/ have bi-arch processors. Its also easier for me because i dont
have to constantly be checking all of your submits, and you have all the
advantages of revision control on your work.
