Hamish

Tried to use kdm but when changing to runlevel 5 I get same problem.

Tried with agpgart removed from modules.conf but to no avail.

Found some new information:

if I run modprobe agpgart I get an error saying that 'unable to get minor:
175'

Any ideas?
I searched on google and found references but no-one seem to have a
solution, just that
it had happened :(

Nearly forgot, I did start with fresh .config for both kernel casts
(2.4.22-rc1 & 2.6.0-test2)

How do you start X, startx or use kdm, xdm.gdm ?
Have you tried the alternate way ? (ie you normally use kdm so try startX as
user when kdm isn't running , or vice-versa)
and if you remove the agpgart module from /etc/modules.conf will it work
then?
You definitely aren't using the nvidia framebuffer driver also ?
IS your 2.4.22-rc1 kernel built from the same .config file as the 2.6.0-X
was?
This too can cause problems IMO when options change, are removed or added.
If
you go back to a lower number kernel i always start the config from scratch,
(not true i actually make a backup before upgrading the kernel in the first
pace, no help to you though). The black screen and 3-finger salute is
reminiscent of a problem nvidia and kdm had existing together.(but that was
a
long time ago)
Don't forget too there is an nvidia linux forum at nvidia.com
