Fellow Source Mage Developers,
This (beginning) thread is not meant to restart the CVS vs. Perforce wars,
but to bring up something I think we should talk about.
We currently have most of our developers using Perforce (which I like) and
some using CVS (which I also like, but haven't used nearly as much as
Perforce, but this is also Open Sourced ;)). I don't see a problem with
people using one or the other except that this creates extra work for Eric
Schabell as he needs to sync the CVS with Perforce. I noticed that while
Schabell was gone on vacation the CVS updates were not synced with
Perforce (not that he should have, it was his vacation. :)).
What I'd like seen done is all of the developers either move to CVS or
Perforce and drop the SCM that is no longer used. Maybe we could even
move to something else, say subversion (improved CVS) or ark (which was
talked about back when KS was here). It's either this, or create an
hourly (a little before the grimoire tarball is created) automated sync
between Perforce and CVS. Either of these two options are needed so that
if someone helps a grimoire out with their section using an SCM other than
what the guru uses it will (soon) be synced with the SCM the guru uses.
Example: Say one of the gurus using CVS asks for some help in catching up
since they have a big section and are busy with RL. So I spend some time
updating what I can of their section using Perforce; how are people
(outside of those on the Perforce list) going to know that I already fixed
some things? Some of them will look at the CVS depository and see that
nothing is fixed and so they (may) duplicate what I've already done. I'm
sure the guru will be ecstatic that someone helped them, but now they have
to do work to get their CVS portion synced with what I did.
Now, I know that having options is a Good Thing (TM), especially since I
bring it up now and then in our discussions. :) However, we should
really decide on one SCM, and preferrably one which is Open Source and
free (as in beer). Nothing against Perforce, I _really_ like Perforec
(it's what I use), but being the distro that we are, shouldn't we eat our
own dog food? There was a similar discussion on the LKML (Linux Kernel
Mailing List), and I don't want this to turn out the same way (no name
calling or personal remarks, etc.)
Please feel free to add to the list (be truthful and not humorous. :)).
Pro's for the SCMs:
CVS
---
-Open Source
-Hosted by the FSF
Perforce
--------
-Used by the majority(IIRC) of SM developers
-Hosted by a non-SM member, so we can quickly have things changed
-Already has the hourly grimoire tarball setup
-One of Three
