I had the same issue when building an
~amd64 archspec Gentoo install in a VM for some freelance work...
unplugging and re-plugging the keyboard fixed it for X and left only
the active application at the time of the freeze affected

a "ps ax" then kill on the affected program restored everything

that was 1.7 archives
