A 64-bit ISO is something I've been waiting for a long time. I can't
believe we still don't have one! I'll be replacing my laptop's Kubuntu
with SMGL as soon as there's a 64-bit option, and my brother has said
he'll happily switch from Windows to Linux entirely when we get that
x86_64 ISO out.

Realizing that things tend to not get done before someone does them, I
will. My time is constrained due to a Summercode job [0] and that
universal "It's Summer Again!" feeling in the back of my skull, so I
will need someone to give me some basic advice though. I have the 64-bit
Kubuntu install which I can use as a sandbox. Just tell me how.

I won't, however, promise that I'll maintain the x86_64 ISO once it's
ready. I just want to set things in motion, mostly due to selfish
motives. But I guess it's a start.

There is already a 64-bit iso that has gone down the same path you
described. You can use it to install. I have. It's what I used to
build my 64-bit xen box.

So rather than build another single stove-piped iso, use that one. Or
help flux_control with it.

Lets not waste effort.

I'd rather not use that one. I've tried it once or twice, and all in all
it was a painful experience.

We have a pretty decent new ISO now. If I could re-build it in a 64-bit
chroot and create an image out of it, I wouldn't consider it wasted
effort. Or is there something in particular that would make that sort of
a thing complex?

I'm not sure. It depends on what you're looking for. If you want a simple extract a tarball and viola, I 've got an installed 64-bit machine. Our existing silver thistle iso will do it. If you want something more automagic and fancy, then we don't have anything, and it takes a significant amount of effort to generate.

Talk to flux_control on IRC and see if you can use what he's got. Or find out where you can help.
