Mine started doing that a few days ago. Googling got me nowhere and I
thought it was just my machine with a random issue. I don't have any
more details -- my machine is working now. I use the nvidia_driver on
the 2.6.16 kernel with latest version of xorg from the test grimoire.

I know I'm not helping, but I thought I'd at least mention you are not
alone :).

I think I recompiled everything I could think of (xorg, kernel,
nvidia_driver), and it kept doing what you say. But then, upon a
desperate `startx` command, it worked. I have no idea what I did, if
anything.

I'll keep my eyes open on this subject. I may be able to help or learn...
