Thanks for everyones input.

After trawling through some of the mailing lists, I found a reference in Grimoire list (surprisingly I was part of that discussion also :)
and found the solution that helped me:

1. Re-install from scratch (not an issue for me as was only slightly
ahead of this point anyway)
2. Follow normal procedure for updating to latest Sorcery and grimoire
3. Update spells as required
4. cast -r -c gcc
5. (heres the change found in list) cp -vp /lib/* /tmp/lib ; echo "/tmp/lib" /etc/ld.so.conf ; ldconfig
6. Now cast -r -c glibc
7. Once completed, remove line from ld.so.conf and rerun ldconfig

Now it all seems to work.

I guess this brings up two other queries for me:

1. If this is still a problem (ie solution was back in 2003) should
this not be added to the spell perhaps?
2. Has anyone else done a rebuild that works without issue? (I never
have :( )

might it have something to do with devfs?

I had similar troubles when I had forgotten to turn that option on in my
kernel.
