here on my system saying yes to configure the kernel ends up with make
menuconfig running.
What you are reporting might be due to the spell now trying to bring up the
GUI interface if DISPLAY is found set. It does this regardless of whether
root has access to DISPLAY and if it fails I think it might go straight onto
the make portion.
try either running
xhost +
or cast linux from a vt while X isn't running or at least a vt that doesn't
have DISPLAY set.
Anyone using an NVIDIA card and their drivers (that wouldn't install if X
was
running ) would likely have not found this problem either as they would have
been compiling kernels outside of X for six months or more.
