since i like answering my own questions, it seems that the new version
of groff was the problem, i reverted back to the test grimoire on this
computer and only updated that and it seems to be back to normal.
*few minutes later* its also confirmed to be the problem on my other
computer, i changed the version number to 1.17.2 and everything is
ok again.
