In my experience in a wet country, Ireland, woodchips rot down fast when moist. Within 3 months we would have a deep black sludge and not at all suitable for a path.
Water does move underneath the chips but wood chips soak up a lot of water.

Hey all,

Have you experimented with filling irrigation channels with wood chips
so they can act as paths too? Does water still move much underneath the
chips or is it all blocked? I'm considering using this on a backyard
scale. Soil is sand/clay. Thoughts welcome.

Thanks,
