These guys will always bark up the tree that will allow them to try to create
monopolies. A real energy solution will enable us all to have our source of
energy in our back yard, or our neighborhood.

Bill Gates is not a recommendation I would trust. He is a big investor in
GMO Monsanto, and with the Rockefeller Brothers has started a Biotech (read
GMO) Institute in Africa to train African farmers to use biotech and the
necessary chemicals to ruin their indigenous agriculture. They hired Kofi
Annan to flog their product.
Until they come up with a clean fuel for their schemes I'll stick with the
sun and wind for energy. Problem is Exxon and other oil giants don't make
money off of wind and solar!

I wonder if this is for real; the Gates name connected to it seems to give
it crediblity and certainly financial backing. Maybe the biggest challenge
will be to
get the power generation industry to adopt this technology.

The power companies use wind and sometimes solar in combination with coal,
gas and nuclear plants. They dominate the field.
If solar and wind were cheap enough for homeowner retrofits or original
installations perhaps they would not control the sources of electrical
energy and
people's monthly bills would be much cheaper o if off grid completely, zero
power bills other than system equipment maintenance. This will remain a
pipe dream for
the indefinite future.
I know the reply I would get from Scott :-) but posted the news anyway. One
my main interests in permaculture involves learning how others, especially
those in third world countries, manage to survive on all fronts over the
generations. I always thought it Priority One to research this and
documents it. Create an online interactive "database" that seeks to
involve people in every culture in every land, every ethnic background,
research their means of survival, document it and make every effort to
preserve it, all through a global project with
everyone involved seeing how everyone else lives across the globe and
learning from them. This was my intent way back when we envisioned such an
online project, then a plant and animal relationships and guilds database.
Still possible, wiki or no wiki, and the Appropedia is not the resource for
this; it needs to be a pure permaculture magnum opus for folks interested.
This is something Bill Gates could fund. My own take is appending a product
and services production, marketing and distribution network for each
bioregion. It is especially distasteful to me
to learn about such things as "in Africa to train African farmers to use
biotech and the necessary chemicals to ruin their indigenous agriculture".
This ought to be a big heads up for those folks; if I were one of them I
would be on high alert. Eastern Europe is not exempt from this kind of
exploitation either, or Russia; same methods used, same lies and
propaganda. The same game players seem to be trying to take over food
production in the US as well. Time for grassroots America to get motivated
and get busy, build networks and learn to survive on all fronts.
If Scott and Koreen have time to develop this thread that would be great
even it only amounts to an intellectual exercise.
