Some data on solar improvements. Have no idea what the life cycle analysis is
on these approaches - lots of chemicals involved that I'm not familiar with.
I can't help but think about where we would be going with research if the
playing field were truly leveled. We would have a lot more choices, as
individuals, that is for sure.

Here's an article that explains some of the disparities between the subsidies
that oil gets and what renewable energies are offered (toward the end of the
article)

Hey, Wes--
One off-the-wall question for Alex and Daniel. I'm wondering where they got
the figure of "850,000 permaculture projects" from. That seems high to me;
it's an average of 5000 sites in each of 160 countries. I have pretty good
data that there have been no more than 400,000 permaculture books sold so
far, and many of those are multiple purchases by the same person--I have lots
of 'em, myself--so maybe 200,000 people have read a Pc book. And a while ago
some of us calculated there are no more than 350,000 PDC grads in the world
(at 20 people per PDC that's 17,500 PDCs, or 1000 PDCs taught each year for
17 years, and I don't think there are 1000 PDCs taught every year!).
So it's hard for me to believe that twice as many people who have taken a PDC
or 4x as have read a permaculture book are creating sites. I know that not
everyone who builds a site has taken a PDC, but also, no where near everyone
who takes a PDC or reads a book builds a site. About 10 years ago Mollison
estimated 1000 sites around the world; a leap to 850,000 is quite a jump in a
decade.
Just playing with numbers here, but we need to keep our claims believable,
and I don't think this one holds up (and clearly I am putting off more
important but less fun tasks if I am doing this sort of thing!).
