G'day,

The best book I know on the topic is 'Design and Construction of Small Earth
Dams' by K.D. Nelson, Inkata Press. Its now out of print and therefore its
hard to get these days...Otherwise I have an 'Off the
Contour<http://regenag.blogspot.com/>'
post titled 'Earth Dam
Design<http://regenag.blogspot.com/2011/02/off-contour-7-earth-dam-design.html>'
which is a reproduction of an article I wrote for 'The Permaculture
Activist' in 2000. The aforementioned book was the primary reference for
this article. Otherwise later this year Eugenio Gras
(COAS<http://www.coas.com.mx/cms/>)
and myself are releasing a book to be published by
EcoHabitar<http://ecohabitar.org/>(Spain) in both Spanish and English
which will deal with a lot of these
questions. I would also point you towards an excellent article titled 'A
Guide to Back-Flood
Swales<http://permaculture.org.au/2010/12/15/a-guide-to-back-flood-swales/>'
published on the Permaculture Research
Institute<http://permaculture.org.au/>site by our good mate and
colleague Cam Wilson of Forest
Edge Permaculture <http://forestedgepermaculture.com/> (AU).

Hope that this helps,

All the best,

Darren
